Regular Fall Hunts- September 21- October 31, 2009
3 Day Hunt- Monday to Wednesday and Thursday to Saturday- $1450 US
6 Day Hunt- Monday to Saturday- $2175 US
A typical day starts at about 4:00 a.m. with coffee, juice, toast, muffins, or fruit. Then it’s off to the fields with you guide for the morning goose and duck hunt. We hunt from Final Approach layout blinds, and use white cover suits when hunting snow geese. Decoys are never in short demand around here, and usually get accused of too many. Guides are all accomplished callers, but we do use electronic callers when hunting snow/blue/Ross’ geese. After the shooting and photo secession, it’s back to the lodge for a big home cooked lunch and a quick nap.
The afternoon hunts start around 1:00 p.m., with your choice of sharp-tail grouse, Hungarian partridge, sandhill cranes, or ducks (the last two weeks of October, geese may be hunted all day). Once you have had your fill of shooting in the afternoon, its back to the lodge for a home cooked supper, and a hot shower. Hunts are all conducted on private land within a 50 mile radius of the lodge. We have a minimum of one spotter out looking for you next hunt while you are out hunting as well as a network of land owners that keep tabs on birds in different areas for us. Over the last three years we have run an average of about 30 birds per day per 4 man group. Depending on your preferred species to pursue that can go up or down.
Targeted species are totally up to you and your group. You tell us what you want and we do our best to put you on that species. Goose species at this time of year are snow/blue geese, Ross’ geese, several subspecies of Canada geese, as well as speckle belly (whitefronted) geese. Early in the season we have a huge local nesting population of ducks, including; mallards, pintails, blue and greenwing teal, gadwall, widgeon, shovelers, as well as the occasional red head and canvasback. At this time of year we are mostly hunting sloughs and ponds for ducks. As the season progresses the duck focus turns more to migrating mallards in the grain and pea fields. Prior to the third week of October the sandhill crane hunting is second to none with most hunts limiting out. We take a maximum of 8 hunters split between 2 guides this time of year to keep success high.
Limits:
- Snow/blue/Ross’ geese- 20 daily, 60 in possession
- Dark geese (Canada, speckle belly) - 8 daily, 16 in possession (no more that 3 speckle bellies daily, or 6 in possession)
- Ducks (mallards, gadwall, widgeon, teal and shovelers) - 8 daily, 16 in possession
- Ducks (pintails, canvasbacks and redheads) - 3 daily, 6 in possession
- Sandhill Cranes- 5 daily, 10 possession
- Hungarian Partridge- 8 daily, 24 in possession
- Sharptail Grouse- 3 daily, 6 in possession
Late Season Fall Hunts- November 2-14, 2009
3 Day Hunt- Monday to Wednesday and Thursday to Saturday- $1200 US
During the late part of the season our focus switches to big Canada geese and mallards. Occasionally we can get into some spectacular snow goose hunting as well. In the late season there is only one hunt a day as the birds predominantly feed only once a day. The key this time of year is mobility. We spot birds with more intensity this time of ear as the birds are in more isolated flocks along the South Saskatchewan River and smaller spring fed lakes. Birds gravitate to open water and that is where we find them. Not a time of year for the fair weather hunters, but without a doubt my favorite time to hunt. There is also the opportunity to hunt upland birds in the afternoons for an additional cost if you wish. Most people think this is too late to come to Canada, but to those that have experienced it is truly as good as it gets. We only take a maximum of six hunters with one guide during this hunt.
Spring Snow/Blue Goose Hunts- April 1-18, 2009
3 Day Hunt- Monday to Wednesday and Thursday to Saturday- $1200 US
For the hunters that want to shed that winter cabin fever, this is the hunt for you. The spring hunt for snows and blues is an all day adventure. We scout our birds and hunt those fields, but the unique thing about this hunt is the migrating birds. You will see first hand tornadoes of tired and hungry geese spiraling into the spread from way up in the atmosphere. Also in the spring we have the added advantage of being able to use blue goose decoys in the spread with the electronic callers. Decoys spreads can be as large as 1000 decoys depending on the situation. Due to wet conditions we predominantly use white cover suits as opposed to using the layout blinds. We only take a maximum of six hunters with one guide during this hunt.
* A $600 US deposit is required per hunter in group.
